New Religious Movements
These lessons aimed at KS3 students (year 8-9 ideally) explore some contemporary religious movements, the controversies associated with them and urges students to reflect on what makes a religion different from a so called cult.
Lent
This lesson explore the theological basis of lent and encourages students to reflect on why the practice of giving up things we love/enjoy can be beneficial for ourselves and wider society.
10 obligatory acts
This lesson explores the 10 obligatory acts of Shi’a Islam. The lesson introduces students to the 10 obligations and uses the ‘link method’ to help students remember them and understand why they are important to followers. This lesson links to the New edexcel RE ‘Living a Muslim Life’ syllabus.
Bundle
Easter
This bundle comprises of three lessons complete with lesson plans. The trio begins with a lesson on Lent which urges students to reflect on the practice of fasting and abstinence before moving onto a lesson on Holy Week. This lesson draws on the Biblical events of the last week of Jesus’ life. Finally the Easter lesson focus’ on the symbolism of Easter day and concludes with a comparative exam question which reflects on the Easter and Christmas festivals.

Evil and suffering in Buddhism
This lesson explores Buddhism’s response to evil. Students consider the Buddha’s teachings on what constitutes evil and the source of the problem. This lesson always stimulates lively discussion with my students.
The Gospels - are they reliable historical sources?
This lesson explores the reasons why the gospels may not be reliably historical sources. It uses video sources and a classroom game to help recreate and illustrate the problems of oral history and the impossibility of escaping our own interpretation of events.
Flood myths
The lesson aims to compare the story of Noah’s ark to other ancient flood myths. There are a range of tasks, some of which are differentiated.
Churches - key features
This lesson explore the different features of Catholic and Protestant churches
Believers Baptism/confirmation
This lesson explore what confirmation is and the problems associated with teenage rights of passage. It includes discussion, written and role play exercises.
Capital punishment
Intro to capital punishment. This lesson looks at what capital punishment is and the reasoning for and against it.
Students reflect on a series of high profile case studies and consider whether they feel capital punishment can be just.

Bar bat mitzvah short lesson
This is a short lesson that can be easily expanded. It introduces the ideas of coming of age and how this is recognised/celebrated in Judaism.
The Sacraments/Prayer - confession
This lesson explores the sacrament of confession. It looks at the importance of the act of confession from an experiential perspective and draws on the a literary source to help students understand the complexities and importance of this form of prayer.
This lesson suitable for mid to high ability students. It will need differentiation for those less able.

Antisemitism
The lesson begins with an activity aimed at exploring how as humans we are conditioned into making judgements/assumptions about things which distort reality.
The lesson goes onto to explore the experience of Anne Frank through an extract of her diary and an extended writing exercise.
Christianity and racial harmony
This lesson looks at Christian teachings on racial harmony firstly through the parable of the Good Samaritan and later through a collection of images that can be related to religion and racial tensions across the globe.
Cult or Religion
This lesson encourages students to think about the way we categorise different religious groups in society. It includes a card sort activity and discussion activity.
Pilgrimage to Lourdes
This lesson looks at Lourdes as a site of pilgrimage for Christians. It considers events in the life of Bernadette Soubirous as well as urging students to consider the rituals and spiritual healing that some Christians experience as a consequence of making a pilgrimage to this site.

Evil and Suffering
This bundle of lessons includes the power points for a whole scheme of work on evil and suffering. The lessons range from an introduction to the idea of evil, through to an exploration of the nature of God, responses to the problem of evil, Buddhist perspectives and an assessment task. These lessons are interactive and include many tasks that encourage students to develop their oral/discussion skills. These lessons can be used at KS3 or 4 and strongly support the the Edexcel GCSE syllabus.
